Coal torpedo was invented by Thomas Edgeworth Courtenay of the Confederate Secret Service (Confederate Secret Service) during the American Civil War. Also referred to as a bomb coal, coal torpedo is empty cast iron filled with gunpowder and coal coated to resemble lumps of coal.

Similar to the concept of rat bombs, torpedoes coal will be placed in a pile of coal used steam-powered ships of the Navy Union (Union Navy) to blow up the boiler, which was about to explode when the stokers shoveled into the furnace vessel.

The devastation created by the coal torpedo is still unknown because there is no official evidence that reveals the details of the actual ship explosion.
