The concept of a bat bomb meant the United States as an experimental weapon that utilizes the bat to send small bombs (incendiary bomb) against Japanese cities during World War II. The idea is to equip the bat with explosives and release it in the sky Japanese cities. Then the bats scattered secretly and when the dawn will find a place to rest (protection) in corners or crevices of the building, where there is a bomb will explode ..

To smooth this purpose, chosen Mexican Free-tailed bats. Thousands of bats was captured and put into refrigerated container for artificial hibernation. The first trial at Muroc Dry Lake failed because many bats can not wake up from hibernation and fell to the ground after the release of the bomber B-25 Mitchell medium at an altitude of 5,000 feet.

When tested using the original bomb results were pretty good, but a lot of bats that are loose and burn the United States Army facility. After conducting trials with 6,000 bats, eventually the program was canceled because it was too risky given the bat is difficult to control.
